The Shadow & The Sun No. 3 (#8Sunday)

Hello and welcome back, Readers and Weekend Writing Warriors! (If you're a newbie-dewbie-doo, go to this link. You'll find a list of this week's participating authors and learn how you can take part in weekly WeWriWa hops, too.) The last scene I posted from The Shadow & The Sun was a sneaky peek at Gethen and Halina's first kiss, but I still haven't introduced Halina to you. So today's snippet is the first glimpse we see of her in the book and, not surprisingly, she's swinging a sword and an attitude.

Steel rang through King Vernard’s encampment. His bastard daughter, Halina, was dueling with the captain of her guard in an open space among the tents as a group of militairs watched.

“Come now, Thaksin, where are your bollocks, man?” one of the onlookers jeered.

Halina laughed. “I keep them in a little bag around my neck, Charin, right next to yours.”

The soldiers responded with shouts and laughter. But Thaksin seized the moment and lunged into the opening beneath His Ladyship’s guard. Halina blocked, though not fast enough, and her captain’s long-sword smacked her left knuckles.

Halina's rapidly become one of my favorite characters. She's got fire and grit.

I've received final feedback from my editor this week, so I'm on track for an early April release. (I've already begun the first draft of the next novel containing Gethen and Halina. They're just too much fun to give up after only one book!)

Among the living or the dead, he’s never needed anything from anyone …

Shadow Mage Gethen is a powerful necromancer, keeper of the border between the living and the dead, and brother to the king of Besera. But with his dark powers failing and a vengeful entity attacking, Gethen should be happy when a formidable lady knight appears at his gates. He’s not. The price for her aid is steep—his allegiance in a war against his brother.

In battle or in bed, she’s never met a man she considered her match …

Militess Halina is undaunted by the threat of war between her country and neighboring Besera. She earned her titles by shedding blood and breaking bones. She uses her body to reward soldiers who serve her loyally, and to punish those who don’t. And Halina’s never met a man she couldn’t command or crush.

Until now.

Passion and power unexpectedly ignite when a blizzard traps Halina at Gethen's citadel. With the evil entity’s onslaughts rapidly deteriorating Gethen’s sorcery, they have little time to understand their unexpected attraction. But could their passion be the key to defeating an ancient enemy that’s hell-bent on obliterating their world?

Thanks for reading and commenting. Please check out all the other WeWriWa snippets this week. Many great writers and books to be discovered!
